First Beef, Now Chicken

Trader Joes says no to Chicken farm abuseAfter a two-month investigation of animal abuse at a chicken farms in Central California that led to of of the biggest egg producers in the state being singled out for mistreatment, Trader Joes has discontinued carrying eggs from that vendor. "The Monrovia-based chain said it wants all its vendors to abide by industry practices for animal care," according to KNBC.

Chicago-based animal rights group Mercy for Life had a member pose as an employee and video tape gassing of chickens and a worker kicking a bird with his shoe, among other things (video below). Though, Ernie Gemperle, who runs the business said to the press that "I believe our chickens are treated very well. I'm in the business for 57 years. We have improved conditions for birds every year... [Gassing is] not animal cruelty. That's something you have to do when you dispose of chickens."

Earlier this year, animal abuse at a Chino slaughterhouse led to massive recalls throughout the state.
