Since the 80’s Ikea has become a cultural icon of the do-it-yourself furniture world, here in the U.S. Almost all of us at some point or another have struggled putting a piece of Ikea furniture together for ourselves. Artist Felis Stella explores these concepts in her latest exhibit IKEA My House: Part 1 on view now through May 17th at the L2kontemporary Gallery in Chinatown.
Stella's original exhibit includes over twenty bright IKEA washcloths featuring embroidered portraits of various historical figures, and designer furnishings stretched across frames of the same colors. Stella who was born in the USSR, learned needlepoint from her grandmother to add a little individualism to her wardrobe during the Cold War.
The creative portraits, including the likes of Ayn Rand, Fidel Castro, Karl Marx, and Ingvar Kamprad (IKEA founder), are both amusing, and impressive-keeping the simplicity of her lines in step with the simplicity of IKEAs minimalist designs.
Also on display are four large white bath towels illustrating a handyman’s frustration at building a piece of IKEA furniture complete with a video installation of the artist & her friends attempting to build an entertainment unit.
L2kontemporary is an airy gallery space located in Chinatown. Its close proximity to the areas eateries, and shops made this exhibit a most enjoyable afternoon!
