In my neighborhood they are still tearing down old houses like crazy. There is one in progress and a couple that haven't sold yet... On the same block someone divided a huge corner lot and built two giant mcmansions so close together you could lean out the window and easily shake hands with your neighbor.

Too little too late. Now that the housing bubble has gone bust, people are no longer tearing down perfectly good houses and building mcmansions. In a typical LA City Council way they've fixed a problem that no longer exists.
