Suspect in Police Chase Drives into Ocean

crimeA man who ran a red light in South LA led police on a chase that ended in the Harbor area, more specifically off the Port of Los Angeles' Berth 194 in the water. For fifteen minutes, he "stood shirtless on his van's roof, dove into the water and eluded officers by swimming around for 15 minutes," according to KCBS. Finally, he boarded a Los Angeles Fire Department boat and was taken into custody.

Then the man told police that he had no idea he was driving near water until the airbags deployed and water began to enter the vehicle, which appears to be stolen, according to the LAPD.

Unrelated to the incident, Port of Los Angeles dockworkers took the day off in protest of the war in Iraq.
