Anti-Hipster's Guide to LA: Down With the Nerdsters Tomorrow
Let’s face it, there are a lot of bar events going on in our city that we hear about every day. When we heard about a new Wednesday night social in Hollywood called Down With the Nerdsters (DWTN), one had to ask, “What the heck is a nerdster?”
Promoter Griffin Marcus clued us in: “Nerdsters is a term that I came up with to describe what people call hipsters. I don’t find those kids very hip, they seem more like nerds, so I thought that was a funny way to play with the term. It’s all in good fun though with no hard feelings intended. I just feel like a lot of the people who subscribe and champion that scene are pseudo-artists, musicians, and stylists. They are talking about things more then they are doing and being. No one is really trying to bring them to task, so I thought we would try. I am more interested in finding intelligent, creative, and genuine people.”
It’s no secret there’s been a backlash to the hipster lifestyle. But what else makes DWTN different from another bar experience?
“From a booking and music perspective, our goal with this event is to find and feature DJs and musicians who are playing good music that you may not have heard play out yet...One such DJ that [played our last event] was Steve Martin who has a show on KPFK 90.7 called MOOD II SWING (Tuesdays from 9-12). Steve has great taste in music and is the kind of a DJ that I feel people haven’t heard because he is not into that nerdster scene. He is more about quality tunes and exposing his listeners to things that they may not have heard, rather than playing the latest remix DJ crews new song,” says Marcus.

This week’s evening features DJs Dam Funk and Just Max. There’s also an open bar from 9-10 p.m. provided by VeeV, a spirit made from acai.
Marcus says he is trying to offer something new for those tired of the same old scene. “I think that there are a lot of people around who feel like they get hit up to go to the same parties with the same DJs and the same photo booth every week. Our aim is to provide a night for people who are interested in going out to hear good music, meet new people in an intimate setting, possibly have some good conversations and maybe meet a cute girl or guy. It’s not about your new American Apparel fluorescent pink T-shirt or 80s sunglasses.”
