Ice Melts Across the Southland

Yesterday at four different locations around the Los Angeles area, teams built ice structures, a re-creation of performance and installation artist Allan Kaprow's "Fluids." Yesterday, Kaprow's son helped build one of the structures in Pasadena's Memorial Park. LAist Featured Photos contributor Tom Andrews was there to catch it.

From Beverly Hills to San Pedro, "Fluids" structures are still being put up today and tomorrow. Below the photo gallery is a map of locations and dates. The complete schedule can be found at the exhibit homepage.

A note on the environment: Each site is using 36,000 pounds (18 tons) of ice, making a total of 360,000 pounds (180 tons) for all ten sites. All the ice was donated by The Union Ice Company. One reader opined in a preview piece about the structures that this is a waste of water. It brings up a good question: should environmental concerns always put cultural and artistic priorities in the dark?

I'm sorry - I would have had photos too, but after I tried seeing what the ice tasted like, it took the emergency crew awhile to get me free.
