Haven't heard yet, but I suspect, someone got too close to the edge and fell or they were doing something challenging (like scaling a cliff?) that ended with some unfortunate events.

Has anyone hear what exactly happened to cause them to call in the LAFD? I hike up here frequently, and you really have to try to put yourself in a periloud position.

The batcave is right off of a main road.

Yep. Biffles is right. The 'batcave' aka "Bronson Cave" is part of the old Union Rock Company quarry, which supplied a lot of the gravel for the roadbeds of the Pacific Electric Railway. On that map, it's just above the park boundary (where the map turns green) off to the right of Canyon Drive. The trail that goes to it is the S-shaped road that splits off Canyon Drive a bit further up (right in the middle of the word "Canyon" in the "Canyon Dr" label). The quarry is the bowl-shaped bit at the bottom right of the "S", and the cave is a tunnel that goes through the tooth-shaped pointy bit that snuggles into the left side of the bottom curve of the "S".

the Batcave is on a separate trail to the east of the Bronson Canyon trail proper, and isn't at a very high elevation...from the map, looks as if these hikers were farther up....
