'Fluids' to be Built Friday at LACMA, then Melted

Since late March, performance art happenings have taken place all around Los Angeles. From students at USC dragging cement blocks in public right-of-ways to women licking jam off cars, the Allan Kaprow exhibit has extended beyond the gallery walls of the MOCA Geffen Contemporary gallery exhibit. Through the end of June, recreations from the pioneer of performance art will continue. And one of the larger scale pieces begins this weekend.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Friday at LACMA, teams of volunteers, students, and others will reinvent Fluids (1967) by building a structure out of ice blocks. Vaguely viewable from Wilshire Blvd., if you're cruising the streets near the museum on Friday, you'll best see the action from 6th Street. Of course, you can always park and watch the construction.

Nine other temporary ice structures will be built Friday through Sunday at locations including The Getty, Rodeo Drive in Beverly HIlls and at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. A full list of times and locations are listed at the exhibit's website.

Kaprow, who died in 2006, was a teacher at University of California, San Diego.

Ice Blocks? Because like, were not in a drought or anything...

Oh, shut up. Like those blocks of ice make any long-term, strategic difference in water conservation. Isn't it bad for the rain forest when we use wooden easels, then? Shouldn't we all just forsake art supplies and stay home? I'm sorry, but what a dumb comment...

We're also building Fluids over at Angels Gate in San Pedro on Sunday for those South Bay folks who can't make it out to the Westside. It's probably not too late to volunteer at most locations if you'd like to get involved.

It just seems Hypocrytical of LAist to me to post this with out blinking an eye.

Thanks for the tip LAist!
