ABC7 Experiments with Vegetarianism

The Veggie Grill in El Segundo and IrvinceWith an American Institute for Cancer Research study in hand, ABC7's Lori Corbin, aka "The Food Coach," visited the Veggie Grill in El Segundo. "Several large studies confirm that consuming more than 18 ounces [of red and processed meat], a little more than one pound of red meat, bacon, and smoked meats per week, increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 30 percent," Corbin writes. "That's worrisome since many shy from this type of cancer screening."

So Corbin headed over to the meat-free Southbay restaurant to do a taste-test with meat eaters. "I could tell it wasn't beef but I liked it better," said one participant. Others concurred that the faux-carne experience was satisfying.

The Veggie Grill doesn't advertise that they are meat free, but the business seems to be doing well with its two locations (an additional storefront resides in Irvine). Menu items include hot wings, sweet potato fries, a Chinese chicken salad, carne asada, chipotle BBQ, a crispy vegan chicken sandwich and even a menu for gluten free options (pdf).

- If Americans were to reduce meat consumption by just 20 percent it would be as if we all switched from a standard sedan to a Prius.

- Livestock production generates nearly a fifth of the world's greenhouse gases — more than transportation.

- Agriculture in the U.S. contributes to nearly three-quarters of all water-quality problems in the nation's rivers and streams.

- Meat factories consume enormous amounts of energy, pollute water supplies, generate significant greenhouse gases and require ever-increasing amounts of corn, soy and other grains, a dependency that has led to the destruction of vast swaths of the world's tropical rain forests.

- About two to five times more grain is required to produce the same amount of calories through livestock as through direct grain consumption.

woah. I actually agree with torrmoz. Eat less meat!

What doesn't cause cancer now a days? I still don't buy it. Bring on the burgers!
