Actually, I was a little surprised on Friday to see someone biking in the breakdown lane of the 5 on the way to San Diego.

My roomate and I were heading down to Rosarito-Ensenada. As we were driving along, I remarked that the railway along the ocean had a bike path next to it and wasn't that nice but we were in the middle of nowhere and I wondered where it started and ended.

Well, a few miles down the road I saw someone riding along the breakdown lane. He seemed quite happily going along--plenty of room on the breakdown lanes and it's not like there was bumper-to-bumper traffic. If you could deal with cars passing at 65-70 or so, you'd be fine. He was probably safer there than on a surface street. About the only "Exit" he had to contend with was a rest stop a couple of miles up the way. But you could go through, I suppose, and just come out the other side.

So I was curious when I got home and checked. Sure enough, San Diego County has marked a small section of the 5, 52, and 805 breakdown lanes for bicyclists.

Cool idea. It'd be interesting to try to implement that in LA...

i used to work at the peets on montana and 16th and bill nye used to come in all the time. good story, huh?
