The Metropolitan Water District is asking residents to conserve water by watering their lawns one day less a week, according to KNBC. If that happens, the water saved could equal "as much water as the cities of Anaheim, Burbank, Long Beach and Pasadena use in one year."
A 13-week advertising campaign is being launched to request voluntary conservation. And while watering the lawn is something many do, apartment dwellers do not have to deal with that directly. So what can one do? Here are a few ideas:
- The obvious: Don't leave the water running while brushing your teeth
- The obvious, part two: Hey asshole, stop watering the sidewalk.
- Middle-Ground: If you have a half decent dishwasher, you really don't need to wash or rinse your dishes clean AND THEN put them in the dishwasher. Choose one, not both.
- For the hardcore: "If it's yellow, mellow; if it's brown, flush it down." At first, reaching for the handle is a hard habit to break, but you'll get the hang of it.

Painfully obvious: How about don't have a lawn of green grass in what is essentially a desert for 8 months of the year?
Go native plants!
Fix drips and slow leaks!
low flow toilets, if you dont' want to set it up, get a small bottle or 2, fill it up with sand, and drop it into the tank. less water will flush out, and i like this method better since you can set how much water will flush out, some of those low flow toilets don't do a good job and leave a nice odor...
get some high pressure/efficiency faucets too.
something the city could do to help their goal in the future... allowing multi-unit property owners to individually meter units and have tenants pay their water bill? that could go a long way in helping people realize how much water they are using/wasting.
What is everyone going to get for conserving water? Higher water bills. How about if we can conserve water without the fear of price hikes due to our stellar efforts?
Flushing is overrated.
Or just pee in the shower.
