East LA Taco Trucks are Staying Put

The new taco truck law for LA County

There are over 4,000 taco trucks in Los Angeles County and those that do business in the unincorporated part of East Los Angeles are engaged in a "little war," according to Gloria Molina in the LA Times.

Citing "unfair competition," restaurants say the mobile dining options are forcing their businesses to close early and lose a customer base due to the truck's cheaper prices and accessibility. Currently, the law lets trucks sit for a half hour before moving to another location. If violated, the fine is $60 -- and that's if police have the time to take action and if the taco truck cares or just considers it a cost of doing business (it's pretty cheap rent if you think about it).

Yesterday, the LA County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a law that changes the idle sitting time to a whole hour, but also increases the fine to $1000 and/or jail time. Essentially, parking over the time limit is a misdemeanor for some. The law covers all unincorporated parts of the county, not just East LA where the issue was brought forth from. Taco trucks say they ain't budging.

Just for good measure, how to start a taco business on e-how.com

Good one Grendel! I'm on my way to starting a veggie taco truck, thanks to you and e-how

Thtas rediculous. If someone wants a taco, theyre gonna eat a taco.

That taco truck photo above looks very "happening". I love it.

Taco trucks are the best thing especially at 2am when your stumbling out of a club.

"Unfair competition they say? It's all about competition baby and if you don't like it, then your in the wrong business. Restraints are always in competition with each other. Get over yourself you big babies!

Worriedman, if definitely was happening, that was taken around 1am on Friday.

*Restaurants not "restraints"

kids at oxy (occidental college) worship the local taco trux in eagle rock...but I've never known them to move around...ever! can some of them get special permits to park longer or something? I don't wanna get em in trouble er nuttin...

I get lunch at a taco truck that stops by my work sometimes. 2 tacos for 3 bucks is not bad but for $6.50-$7 I could get 3 at a Mexican restaurant near me and unlike the taco truck, I will not have to pick out any gristle.

The biggest complaint I've heard about the trucks is all the trash that accompanies them - the patrons litter. Seems like they could make more money by having an officer stroll by and give tickets to the assholes that think the sidewalk and other people's front lawns are their trashcans. $1,000 and jail for driver's going (or staying) with their customers is excessive.

Unfair competition?

When a restaurant is willing to serve me killer food for 3 bucks at 4am right in front of club I was at, right on my way home, I'm there.

No one can equal street food. I have been eating at taco trucks my whole life and not once gotten sick. I have gotten food poisoning from a few swanky sit-downs though.

Viva la taco truck!

I would like to see the trucks stay on the streets but also be an example to the communities by going 'green', buying local,
maybe not organic -- but recycle their oil for their fuel, etc
