DVD Tuesday: Hollywood's Darling Arrives

Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby
In ten years, we'll remember this movie for introducing Olivia Thirlby | Photo courtesy of Fox Searchlight

Now that all the hubbub has subsided, can we all agree that Juno was really just an okay movie and that there's no way Ellen Page should ever have been nominated for an Oscar? All I know is that whenever Rainn Wilson or Olivia Thirlby were on-screen I paid zero attention to the dour and monotone Page. In a just world Juno's best picture nomination would have gone to Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Do you know how good this movie was? I didn't even hate Ethan Hawke in it. That's really saying something. Hoffman, of course, was his usual miracle. It's a minor film, but Jeff Garlin was great in Marty, er, I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With. I know I've said this in regards to other films, but I loved everything about Lars and the Real Girl except the actual movie.

Lawrence of Arabia
Where are these vistas in today's films? | Photo courtesy of Sony Pictures

There is no shortage of DVD versions of Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge over the River Kwai, but these two have a nice set of features and are dirt cheap. Even if you never plan on watching either of them, you should at least have them in your collection to impress future dates. I also recommend hanging a kitana over your bed. To all you atheists out there, all I will say is this: how else do explain Tom Arnold's flourishing career? Ditto Lou Diamond Phillips. I don't expect anyone to actually buy Raunch-A-Rama but seriously--click on the link below (NSFW). I'm no prude, but how on earth is Amazon selling this? What's next, Bezos--Jesse Jane in Perverts' POV 46? And, more importantly, when will it be available? Free shipping?

Lawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Collector's Edition, 2 discs)

A-fucking-MEN about Juno! Fucking piece of crap, hipster, over rated movie.

Seriously - gotta echo the poster above. Juno was soooo overrated. It was worth a good, hearty chuckle every now and then, but I forgot about this movie pretty much as soon as I left the theater. A resounding MEH to Juno.

The only thing more hip than loving Juno is hating it.

Juno was a perfectly fine movie, just not transcendent.

Ha! Bus Girl...that is brilliant.
