Pencil This In: Sunday

Because it’s supposed to be such a beautiful day, I suggest heading out to the beach immediately, and then enjoying some of these free (or close to free) events going on in the evening. But that’s just me…

LISTEN
Ann Whitford Paul, author of the children’s books If Animals Kissed Goodnight and Snail’s Good Night, will be hosting a signing and reading of her novels this afternoon. Along with the eleven children’s books she has published, she has also received a New York Times Notable Children's Book citation.

DISCUSSION
Naima J. Keith, a PhD candidate for Art History at UCLA, will lead a talk about Harriet Jacobs’ autobiographical account of her escape from slavery in the mid-1800s, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. The story follows Jacobs’ journeys in New York City and her determination to escape for the sake of her children’s futures.

TOUR
A one hour tour will be held today to focus on Death & the Afterlife in the Ancient World. Participants will learn about historical preservation and rituals done to the deceased from Greece to Egypt.

EXHIBIT
André Kertész’s photography exhibit, Seven Decades', ends it’s run at The Getty today. The photographs tell his life story, beginning in Hungary where he was born and continuing on through his life chronologically and geographically.

MUSIC
LACMA’s Sundays Live returns this week with Sylvia Greenberg on soprano and David Aronson on piano. The duo will be playing pieces by Goldmark, Korngold, Bittner, Walter, Mahler, and Zemlinsky.

GREEN
Today is the last day to check out the Green Living Expo at the Convention Center. With over 200 exhibits featuring new eco-friendly technology and organic products, 55 workshops, live music and organic food stands, no Earth-loving person would want to miss this.
