Pencil This In: Friday

BCAM Art Chats are tonight.
There's lots of stuff to do in LA on the cheap tonight. / Photo by Sundogg via LAist's flickr pool.

This column is dedicated to all the broke folks out there because April is the cruelist month. If you own a house, property taxes are due about the same time as taxes (if you're one of the lucky ones who owe Uncle Sam a little somethin' somethin'). So this Friday edition of "Pencil This In" features events around LA today for under $10. Or better yet: Free.

And remember that LA vs. War and the Los Angeles Art Weekend run through Sunday -- both events are on the cheap. See yesterday's "Pencil" for details.

COMEDY
“Match Game Live!” returns to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre with guest panelists Aimee Mann, Jeff Garlin, Zach Galifianakis and Rob Corddry. The show’s based on the game show from the 1970s and audience members will have a chance to win cash and prizes. ***Advanced reservations are sold out, but there’s a stand-by line for the show.

10 pm // Upright Citizens Brigade // 5919 Franklin Ave., Hollywood // $8.

MORE COMEDY
Following “Match Game Live!” is the free show “Not Too Shabby” where UCB comedians “try out new bits with reckless abandon.” Hosted by Neil Campbell and Paul Rust.

Midnight // Upright Citizens Brigade // 5919 Franklin Ave., Hollywood // FREE.

PHOTOGRAPHY
A photo exhibit by Brent Stewart opens tonight in Beverly Hills. He took set pictures of the Harmony Korine film Mr Lonely, about a bunch of celebrity impersonators living together in a French castle. There’s an opening reception with the artist tonight.

6 pm // Agnes B. // 100 N. Robertson Ave., Los Angeles // Free with RSVP.

TALK*

Zócalo’s lecture series continues with a conversation and screening director Errol Morris. He’s the Academy Award-winning director of Fog of War who revisits the Abu Ghraib scandal and the photos of torture in his latest film Standard Operating Procedure.

7:30 pm // Harmony Gold Theatre // 7655 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles // Free, but reservations recommended.

ART CHAT
College students trained as gallery teachers facilitate informal discussions on special exhibitions and the permanent collection in this new program. From March through May, “Art Chats” will feature the Broad Contemporary Art Museum. (Here’s a hint: It’s “pay what you wish” after 5 pm at LACMA. Meet by the entrance to BCAM on the first level.)

8 pm // LACMA // 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles // Free.

CLASSICAL
Colburn School's performing arts students put on their Friday Night Recital tonight.

8 pm // Mayman Hall @ The Colburn School // 201 S. Olive St., Los Angeles // Free.
