Citing that there are already laws on the books, the LAPD opposed a proposal to make a "personal safety zone" paparazzi law to the Police Commission today. 3rd District Councilman Dennis Zine introduced the idea after the LAPD used $25,000 to transport Britney Spears to UCLA Medical a mere 6 or so miles in order to keep her safe from paparazzi (did you see the video of her leaving UCLA Medical? This is nuts, a must see).

A report by Chief William Bratton stated that the law would "create an inequitable and ambiguous code that would likely be unenforceable." Bratton wrote that jaywalking, speeding and battery laws already on the books and can be used to enforce aggressive paps. "Vigilant enforcement of these laws should deter paparazzi from creating circumstances that potentially endanger the life of the subjects being photographed and/or the surrounding community."

Bratton was also concerned over favoritism toward celebrities. Would the general public be proteceed by these laws? Who defines who is a celebrity and who is not? Same goes for an amateur photographer vs. paparazzi.

However, Zine is not deterred. He believes the current laws that could be used are not specific enough.

After hearing the Chief's report, the Police Commission approved the opposition, moving the recommendation to City Council.
