For Those Who Can't Wait to Buy an iPhone...

Have you had enough of people whipping out their iPhones as a blatant symbol of status and coolness? Sick of grumbling under your breath "soon...soon I'll have an iPhone...blast that Verizon two-year contract!"? Well today's your lucky day. This week, at Las Vegas' CTIA convention, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega has unofficially announced that a 3G iPhone will come to the hands of consumers in a matter of months. So what does this mean?

One of the biggest complaints that consumers have had regarding the "Invention of the Year" is the mechanism for which the iPhone browses the Internet. The 2.5G or "EDGE" mode of mobile Internet is what the first generation of iPhones use as the method of data transfer, and consumers are none too pleased with its speed (even though its still pretty awesome...to those who don't have one :[ ) Ever since its inception consumers and techies alike have speculated upon the arrival of a 3G version, and after this week's convention, we finally have an answer. The official announcement for the 3G version is expected to come at this June's World Wide Developer's conference, so for those who have patiently (or not so patiently) waited for a new version, expect one in your hands before Christmas.

Walt Mossberg also noted quite casually that the 3G iphone will be released in 60 days - just in time for WWDC.

I've been quite happy with AT&T's 3G mobile service and hope that it's been laid out sufficiently so it wouldn't be overloaded by an onslaught of users come iPhone w/ 3G-capability.

Still, according to this map, AT&T still has some holes to fill in as far as blanketing metro LA w/ 3G coverage (Glendale, South Bay, etc).

I might actually buy iPhone if the price doesn't go up. However, I'm still skeptical of the true openness of the SDK and Jobs' general tendency to be a self-serving tease. In which case, I already have big eyes for the Nokia N95 (and soon to launch N96). And what of the imminent Google Android-powered phones?
