“Toys,” an exhibit of artwork inspired by classic toy brands, opened at Gallery 1988 on Melrose earlier this week. The collection pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of Hot Wheels cars – and LAist was there for the opening. We loved the artists’ representations of playthings we haven't thought about in more than 20 years. Think: a VW van made into a roller skate, Speed Racer on acrylic and even Gumby (who looks like he's tripping on acid).

So if you’re a fan of Hot Wheels, Pokemon, Playskool or kitsch in general, then this exhibit is tailor made for you. All the works, by artists such as Greg Simkins, John Burgerman, Brian Kelsing and Tokidoki, are on sale, raging in price between $300 and $5,500. The Toys exhibit runs until April 25.
