LAst Night's Action: Lakers Clinch Playoff Berth

Pau Takes the Lakers to the Playoffs
LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 112-108. The Lakers broke Lawler's Law by defeating the Mavericks even though the Mavericks got to 100 points first. Lamar Odom has a season high 31 points while Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol got 25 points each. The Lakers join the New Orleans Hornets as the only two teams in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff spot. With six games left to go, their only tough games are at home against the Hornets on the 11th and the San Antonio Spurs on the 13th.

LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 7-1. Rookie pitcher Hiroki Kuroda made only one mistake all night by throwing a pitch down the middle to Brian Giles who took it out of Petco Park to tie the game. The Dodgers then killed the Padres with papercuts in the seventh inning with a combination of singles and walks led them to score six runs off of the Padres bullpen. Starting pitcher Chad Billingsley came in for the Blue to close out the final two innings.

Texas Rangers defeat LA Angels 11-6. The most amazing part of this game wasn't the fact the Rangers scored 11 runs. It was that the Angels scored six in the bottom of the ninth to make the game somewhat respectable. Even though the Angels raised a banner celebrating their AL West championship from last season, they couldn't carry the emotions to the game.

Notable Notes

Matt Leinart just keeps going on and on and on. Oh to be that champagne bottle. Wait. What am I saying? Who knows what been in that mouth.

So is he or isn't he? The Times' Sam Farmer reported yesterday that Brett Favre's agent has put out feelers throughout the NFL to see a possibility for a return of Favre. Favre denies it. Favre's agent denies it. And I just really don't care.

I forgot to mention yesterday that Andy Roddick defeated Roger Federer 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 at the Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinals in Miami, FL. This victory breaks his streak of 11 defeats at the hands of Federer and comes on the heels of the resignation of coach Jimmy Connors earlier in the year and engagement to swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker last week. Federer has yet to reach the final of a tournament, his worst showing since 2000. By the way Roddick went down to alleged tanker Nicolay Davydenko in the semifinals yesterday.

Tomorrow's Action

UCLA Bruins vs. Memphis Tigers. The Final Four is here! The Bruins defeated the Tigers two years ago in the Elite Eight, but the Bruins didn't have to face Derrick Rose. But then again, the Tigers didn't face Kevin Love. 3:07 pm KCBS 2, AM 570 KLAC.

LA Dodgers at San Diego Padres. This will be a pitching matchup to watch. Brad Penny vs. Jake Peavy. I can't wait. 12:55 pm KTTV 11, AM 790 KABC.

Texas Rangers at LA Angels. The Rangers send out Kevin Millwood while the Angels avenge last night's loss by sending Jerrod Weaver to the mound. 6:05 pm FSN West, AM 830 KLAA.

Anaheim Ducks at LA Kings. The teams conclude their season series at the Staples Center. 1:00 pm FSN West.

Real Salt Lake at Chivas USA. Chivas has their home opener after ending their season opener in a tie with Dallas. 7:30 pm FSN Prime Ticket.

Wow! That is one of the best sports pictures I have ever seen!

Oh, and, umm, great article too, Jimmy.

Papercuts! Is that official major league terminology?

So do you guys pay AP for these photos or just steal them and put them on this blog? I hope you're paying for them, because if you're not you're opening yourself up to some serious legal liability.

Elise, yes. Papercuts is official terminology. Well in my own little world that is. :)
