Filipino Food! Barrio Fiesta

I was very excited to go to Barrio Fiesta with my Filipino friends Isabel and William. I had very little exposure to Filipino food before, so I was mentally pumped to try all the new stuff they were going to throw at me. Let me say it now, I was not dissapointed. The restaurant is on the East side of Eagle Rock Blvd in Eagle Rock. The parking is a bit tough, as the good-sized restaurant only has a small valet lot. There's plenty of street parking in the residential zones a block away -- but the downside is that you have to breathe in the incredible smell of food as you walk to the restaurant.

Service was very attentive and very friendly, the atmosphere is... well, festive, with very colorful walls and decorations. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and there was a violinist playing along to a CD, he wasn't very good and I wished they just had something else for music... because, really, I don't need to hear a violin version of "Like a Virgin" when I have hard core authentic Filipino food to keep me occupied. I will certainly be back to try more stuff, the menu is extensive and I know we barely scratched the surface. Big thanks to Isabel and WIlliam for being our guides!

I've only eaten at Barrio Fiesta in the Philippines, and I wasn't aware there was one nearby. Score! I've been searching fruitlessly for decent Filipino food, so I'll definitely drag my friends here.

Salo Salo in Artesia makes the best seafood kare kare on the face of the planet. On the weekends, it's PACKED with families. I miss Sunday afternoon lunch there.

p.s. Kevin your pix make me so very proud to be food editor of this here fine-ass website. MAD props to you, my friend.

That kare kare looks amazing amazing

You didn't try the pigs knuckle? Can't remember what its called, but I had it at Barrio.

Oh, and funny you mention that violin guy. All the music at that place seems to be horrific covers of really random ass songs. No idea why they have that guy there. He must be family or something.

Crispy pata?

Barrio Fiesta returned after a few years hiatus. It used to be located in Glendale (near Forest Lawn) and before that they were in Koreatown (6th and Serrano - same minimall where Kyochon is now).

Interestingly enough, look across the street from the current Barrio Fiesta location, there's another Filipino restaurant called "Fiesta sa Barrio" (which means pretty much the same thing) -- it was apparently started by some former Barrio Fiesta employees who splintered and started their own venture.

Yep, thats it. Tasty stuff. Funny looking, too.

reminds me of Max's in Glendale.

Love kare kare, but I'm not a fan of tripe. Therefore, I usually shy away from kare kare made in Filipino restaurants and usually just opt for my mom's. :) But for Filipino food, I'm intensely loyal to Little Ongpin, which is on Beverly in HiFi, on Sunset and in Eagle Rock, probably close to Barrio Fiesta.

Elson, we need to school everyone on the Filipino eats!

Except that if you really like Filipino food, you wouldn't eat there :)

I'm partial to Asian Noodles in Chinatown. But I personally believe the best Filipino food is served at relatives' and family friends' parties. Can't beat home cookin'!

Darleene: I heard there's a website that's coming back that will deal with that issue ;)

Perhaps next time you guys should try dinuguan. I'm glad Barrio Fiesta still thrive in Eagle Rock. It wasn't as successful also when it was located near the Lakewood Mall.

I grew up in the 80s in the Philippines and I can say that we have a penchant of appreciating pop songs of that era.

Dine-in Filipino restaurant is hard to find, since some people opt to eat fast-food Filipino restaurant. If there will be a website as Elson mentioned that would be even better.
