What the guy neglects to tell you is that if you're heading that direction, you're probably a grad student biking back from campus to the graduate housing. In which case, you'd turn right at that intersection, not keep going straight.

finally someone said something... I always skateboard down that road, on that bike lane... and I just keep going when it ends, super tightly in between cars... dangerous, but the sidewalks suck

I can't remember where, but somewhere in Los Angeles almost positive I've seen one shorter than that. I'll have to keep my eye out for it, but it's easy to miss bike lanes when they last only a few pedal strokes.
