DVD Tuesday: Slim Pickings

The Kite Runner Nothing quite goes together like kites and Afghanistan. | Photo courtesy of Paramount Vantage

The Kite Runner was one of those movies that I obviously should have seen in theaters. I just could never work up enough enthusiasm to actually go out and do it. It's a no-brainer DVD rental. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't The Mist sort of crappy? Why exactly is it getting the deluxe edition DVD treatment? It took forever for Wristcutters: A Love Story to navigate its way to the big screen where it quickly came and left. Another no-brainer to pick up on DVD for me. Lost Highway was the last David Lynch movie that I really dug. Bill Pullman--in all of his confused Everyman glory--was a perfect fit for Lynch's surreal and scuzzy universe.

Aside from being a great flick, Bonnie and Clyde was one of the handful of movies from the late 1960s (along with The Graduate and Easy Rider that radically changed the distribution marketplace and paved the way for the excess and brilliance of the 1970s. If you've somehow managed to never see it, correct that error today. For me, Alain Delon is the definitive French actor of his generation (just edging out Jean-Paul Belmondo). The same goes for Nicole Eggert but in reverse. If you can't be bothered to actually read W.B. Yeats (I'd start with the Michael Robartes and the Dancer collection), pick up this DVD and get some Irish culture.

Bonnie and Clyde is overrated, The Mist I thought was pretty good and while Lost Highway is definitely my favorite Lynch movie Mulholland Drive is really good.

I never had the enthusiasm to go see The Kite Runner in the theatres, but still ended up going when visiting my parents in Chicago. It was amazing and I would recommend everyone to check the DVD out.
