NoHo Laemmle Theatre to Break Ground Today
The East Valley is finally getting its art house/indie movie theatre starting tomorrow -- at least the digging and construction part, that is. And unlike the two other Laemmle Theatres in the Valley, the new attraction in the NoHo Arts District will be more transit friendly with the confluence of the Metro Red and Orange lines nearby.
The movie theater is the final phase of the NoHo Commons project, which includes the already-built HOWS Market, The Lofts, The Gallery and other various streetside retail (food, bank, etc). In addition to the seven-screen Laemmle Theatre, there will be 200,000 square feet of office space, 42,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space and nine residential units.

Was there today...maybe later I can link to photos including a photo of the layout of the place.
The retail space will only be 10,000 or so square feet...unless you're including in the 42,000 square foot figure the movie theater.
They are also going to be restoring the 1920s era Phil's Diner, which is currently being stored behind the property, and will be installed towards the corner of the new complex (its a train-car style diner).
There is/was no mention of any residential units

excited we'll have a laemmle in the neighborhood that I can walk to instead of having to drive over the hill

I'm excited too, even though I'm a bike and Orange Line ride away. Back in college days when living up at CalArts in SCV, the drive to Pasadena to see a movie at Laemmle's was nice, but too far for an often occurrence. And Encino never seemed to be playing the movies we wanted to see.
