As we wait for the first Tesla dealership to open here in Los Angeles, many others are looking for a something a wee bit more affordable than $99,000. And while a nearly $30,000 car is not considered to be "on the cheap," you probably save in the end with this car.

Meet the Aptera Typ 1 where gas costs you about a penny per mile (try 300 miles per gallon) for this futuristic two-seater car made in Carlsbad, CA. The visual wow-factor of the car has purpose too -- it's a low-drag body (that's where MPG savings comes in). Niche and online sources have been all over this car for a little while now, but on Friday, KABC picked up on it and they say there have already been 11,000 deposits and deliveries for the motorcycle classified/HOV lane accepted vechicle will start later this year.

The Apterta, which is Greek for "wingless fight," will only be sold in California for now; reasons of "seamless customer service," other state regulatory issues and various business aspects are the cause of that. No doubt, though, it will be seen in Los Angeles soon enough, and most likely people will see Jay Leno sporting one of these babies down Coldwater Canyon every so often. It can exceed 85 mph.

Although prices can change, the Aptera is currently listed at $26,900 for an all electric version and $29,900 for the plug-in hybrid. See the car in action below with Popular Mechanics.

Via Popular Mechanics | Regarding the noise, Aptera says this vehicle driven was "an early prototype designed to test the vehicle's basic performance and aerodynamics. The production Aptera will not have this issue."
