"Didn't the original Barney's have a sign in the 70's/80's to the effect that no gay people where allowed inside (in less delicate terms)?"

Yes Hindinwood. I worked at a pizza place at Santa Monica and Sweetzer in the early 80's. At that time the LGBT community was just starting to gain power politically in that area. The rapidly dwindling number of straight bars in W.H'wood were known to put up signs that they knew would be offensive to the LGBT community so that they would go to a different bar. The predominately LGBT City Council put pressure on them to take down the signs, and gay tolerant straight people started avoiding those bars. The offensive tactic backfired on the bar owners, some of them closed down for lack of business, and the signs came down. Now it's all ancient history.

Some of those bar matchbooks that had the bar name on them and were emblazoned with, "Faggots stay out", might be worth a fortune as collectors items these days.

"On the westside 'over/under'"

Killer philly cheese steak sandwich too, (and authentic according to a native Phillyist I know).

Barney's gained their fame as Jim Morrison's watering hole, in the bio book, "No One Here Gets Out Alive".

So you should almost expect a touristy clientele and a jaded arrogant staff.

That said, I tend to avoid places like that. I went there once about 20 years ago to have a beer with friends when I worked in the area. Haven't been back since. Other than a good beer selection, they really don't have much to offer locals in search of a friendly neighborhood pub.

So yea DA, let them feed off the tourist crowd.

They deserve each other.

El Guapo on Melrose has TONS of TV's and generally features events for whatever large sporting event happens to be going on at that time.

As a Suns fan, you may be interested to know that many Arizona State fans call this bar home on Saturdays during college football season.

Let Barney's SM keep the tourists crowd...Hollywood and Pasadena are more fun for us locals.

It sounds like you are looking for something on the west side, but if you are willing to haul ass across town, Big Wang's in Hollywood is an awesome spot. Lots of TV's, and the employees are always willing to change at least one of them so you can watch your game. Very good food, and awesome wings. And a fun (and damned good looking) crowd, especially during college football season.

I'd say since the outtatowner maroons go a long way to keep the place in beans, Barney's disdain for that segment of their clientele is probably a lot less disgusted.

nice barney's review. pretty spot on i would say.

might be old news, but try sonny mclean's on 26th & wilshire. it's a boston sports bar but w/ a good vibe and not all the clueless idiots working and patronizing the establishment as per barney's
