Uncle O'Grimacey! This year there hasn't been any advertising for that horror of horrors, the Shamrock Shake. But curiosity got the best of me. I headed over to the local McDonalds and ordered one up. The employees gathered to stare at me the way people do when I ask for my tacos extra spicy or I'm about to eat something like pig's ears. I heard one of the employees mumble to the other, "Did you taste it?"
It is just as hideous as I remembered. It is like a blank milkshake that tastes like nothing. You think vanilla is "nothing" but it is surreal when you realize how powerful vanilla is, and how bad "nothing" really is. Hiding under the frothy blandness was just the barest hint of spearmint. Not something half-decent like peppermint, no - spearmint. Girl Scout Thin Mints would run away crying if they knew what a bad name McDonalds was giving to minty treats.
I asked the gathering of employees if all of the McDonalds had Shamrock shakes, or just a few select locations. They just stared at me and shrugged. There were no signs advertising the shakes, and it wasn't even on the menu. Not even the drive-thru menu. It's like their dirty little secret. The only good thing I can report is that they have really tuned down the use of food coloring. In the 70s they put so much food coloring in the Shamrock shake, it was known for turning children's poo bright blue.

I'm not an offensive stereotype because I'm not human - I'm a Grimace - what the hell is a Grimace??? Why did they name a character after an unpleasant facial expression?
Nyquil sundaes? Next party for sure!
What? This isn't a bar? Never mind. Can you just put a little whiskey in this? And why not a potato as long as we're going there.
I believe you can also order a McGrasshopper - half chocolate, which might have been less disgusting. Or maybe more disgusting. The official, and less appealing name of the mint-chocolate shake is the "Minty Mudbath" in a cross-promotion with Shrek the Third.
Some people LOVE Shamrock shakes and have websites devoted to the minty treat.
Uncle O'grimacey resides in his home country for eleven months of the year and visits his nephew Grimace in March, bringing with him the incredibly delicious Shamrock Shake.
After reading that quote, I somehow started thinking about William Burroughs and Mugwumps and I saw visions the Shamrock shake being milked from O'grimacey's numerous teats, hidden in the folds of his enormous green blubber. And I just about lost my shake.
If I haven't dissuaded you yet, you can search for Shamrock locations, or report your find here. I did my duty as a good citizen. I reported my find.
Do you think someone was having fun on Wikipedia?
Shamrock Shakes were widely available across Canada and the United States until the early 1990s. According to the McDonald’s website, Shamrock Shakes are now sold exclusively in Ireland

I actually heard an ad for the Shamrock Shake on KROQ the other day.
Yeah, I heard that ad, too! But thanks for taking one for the team, Elise. I totally forgot what these tasted like and now I'm glad that I'm really not missing anything. But I think I used to love these when I was a kid.
You're crazy. Shamrock shakes are great.
Don't get me started on this one.
Remember the Porky Pig "Wearin' O'the Grin" cartoon?
These things are so sweet they make my throat constrict and cause me think I am going into Anaphylactic shock.
Hmm, I've heard some ads on the radio... plus see signs every time I pass by McDonald's advertising the return of the shake. As we noted over at Franklin Avenue, the LA-area McDonald's haven't offered the Shamrock Shakes in several years; this March marked its triumphant return. (What can I say, like the equally elusive McDonald's pumpkin pie, I've been a sucker for limited-edition treats since childhood.)
I was really hoping it would be good, since I love Thin Mint cookies. But I'm not willing to try another location for verification.
Donna: Maybe we should post the "offensive Irish stereotype of the day" until Monday!
Franklin Ave: What do the signs/posters look like? I havelooked all over to get a pic. And congrats on 5 years!
I tried looking at McDonald's website and couldn't find anything but I did spend too much time playing in their interactive "Asian room". I was very disappointed the Godzilla didn't do anything, but you could really do a cool sample of "year of the rat! year of the rat! year of the the the rattherattherat..." by hovering over the golden rat.
I am Asian
Well, this was my experience on Mar. 14: I live in Pasadena, CA, and I decided to get a Shamrock Shake. (Note: I've heard plenty of advertising both on radio and TV for these). I went to a store around the corner from me, but was told that they "Don't have them right now."
So I went to another a few blocks farther away because, you know, they're everywhere. Again, I was told that they "Don't have them right now."
(Note #2: They had vinyl signs by the drive-thrus, saying AHH, AHHH, AHHHH for the different sizes)
OK, so now I'm a little pissy, or pissssssy, so when I noticed a phone number above the order window for comments, I decided to give them a call. I reached a voice mail and told them what had happened. Within twenty minutes I got a call from Sam, the Vice President for the region. He was beside himself with apologies, and not only set me up with a free shake at another location, but is sending me free desert coupons.
I was surprised that I got a call back at all, let alone been offered anything for free. So maybe there are plenty other more important things I could be worrying about, but those are for next week. Today I get to have a shake.
Lodger: what? Wow - they must have some heavy duty corporate policy to push those shakes! That is too funny.
Elise: of course we could, but that's only more ammunition. I just spoke w/my dad (the irish bartender) who is gearing up for tonite and tomorrow.
