Fargo Street Blues
Every year about this time, the Los Angeles Wheelmen sponsor a bike ride up Fargo Street. This climb, which is this Sunday, draws attention every year for the feat these cyclists attempt and complete (last year's record was 90 accents!). From their website:
Once a year cyclists gather from all over to match their legs and skill against Fargo Street Hill, reportedly the steepest hill in Los Angeles. It's only a couple of blocks long, but at 32% grade, it's quite a feat if you can climb it. Many just want to see if they can make it up the hill at all. Amazingly, others vie to see how many times they can make it up the hill in one day. The record is now at 90. Many will try the hill. Many won’t make it. Come out to cheer them on and maybe give the hill a try yourself. It’s a thrill either way. Registration for the hillclimb opens at 9 AM and closes at noon. What bothers many, though, is the fact that this may not be the steepest street in Los Angeles. In fact, the City Engineer lists the steepest street as 28th Street in San Pedro. In a 2003 article, the LA Times wrote that:
"According to the city, the steepest section of public roadway is on 28th Street in San Pedro. For about 50 feet between Gaffey Street and Peck Avenue, it climbs at a 33.3% angle."
So, whether or not Fargo is the steepest street in the CIty or not, people still look at it as such and use it for challenges like the Fargo Street Climb or a dance routine?

Um, 90 accents seems quite excessive. But I might believe 90 ascents though.

Bothersome to some? Sure there are streets mathmatically steeper than Fargo, but none come near to Fargo's length.

Man, there is a block on Goodman in Redondo Beach next to Speckles that is practically vertical. A hill on Ripley near ...actually, right by the crazy guy with the cache of guns...and 190th hill are all pretty intense.
I rode straight down them all on a skateboard as a kid. But I'm sane now.
