LAst Night's Action: Clips Can Win, Kings Can't
Clippers 99, Heat 98 - With Shaq in Phoenix and Dwayne Wade injured for the season, the Clippers had an opportunity to beat somebody -- and actually took it. Cuttino Mobley hit a pair of free throws in the final three seconds to seal the deal. He led the way with 29 points.
Since the Clippers won't be lucky enough to face many more horrible teams like Miami, Andrew Kamenetzky at SportsHubLA has some ideas on how to make things more entertaining.
Avengers 65, Rattlers 33 - Los Angeles reeled off a pair of wins to start the arena season and -- surprisingly -- has done it with defense. They blasted Arizona in the desert last night. Sonny Cumbie threw seven touchdowns for the Avengers.
Cannucks 2, Kings 1, OT - Los Angeles was shelled with 37 shots in regulation and managed just 18 of their own, allowing Vancouver to mount a comeback. As you may not care, the Kings have the worst record in the NHL.
Elsewhere - If you want to prove you're popular, it doesn't help to get caught buying your own replica jerseys ... Among the reasons the majority of NBA players go broke within 5 years of retirement? They gamble too much ... Soccer fans love a good riot ... We'll give credit for hanging onto Bynum, but this writer is nuts for wanting to give executive of the year honors to Mitch Kupcake ... Soccer referees under attack. Imagine what they would do to Pac-10 referees in other countries.

Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown. 'nuff said
And the Award for "First word in a title typo" goes to . . .
Andy - I don't believe that was Kupcake's move for a second. Jerry West is still tied to both teams, still has a lot of influence, and I've got a pretty strong hunch he masterminded the deal. That's the only thing that explains why Memphis was willing to get so badly screwed on the deal. And not only could West justify it in terms of his own sentimentality and feeling bad for the Lakers, it's a good move for the entire sport to have a vibrant franchise in LA built around one of the Association's biggest stars.
Jayson - LAst Night's Action is the name of this feature. We've written hundreds upon hundreds of them. Gothamist has Last Night's Action, and we kept the title as a hat tip but capitalized the second letter to tie-in LA.
I had thought that when the trade was made also, but after watching the Jerry West "In My Own Words," I decided against that. In it, West was pretty clear about staying away from everything basketball and enjoying his free time. If you didn't catch it, they're re-broadcasting it on FSN tonight at 6:30PM.
Besides, Kwame Brown was one of the better expiring contracts out there. And as much as Gregg Popovich would like to protest, nobody really offered Memphis anything better at that mid-season point. Memphis got better offers during the offseason, but they probably didn't think they were going to be so horrible in a stacked West.
Ha! I turned off the Kings game when they were up 1-0 with about five minutes to go. The only thing left to see this season is whether or not they can hang on to last place, or whether they'll leapfrog Tampa Bay and come in 29th.
thanks for the info and for keeping the response above the belt. It's rare to have comment edict. thank you.
