I'm a big fan of Matador's Buy Early, Get Now program.

Pay for a CD about 3 months before it comes out and immediately get a HQ, DRM-free download. Then, download a live show and some bonus tracks. Finally, the CD arrives in the mail on the release date.

As record albums are becoming obsolete, I feel like we are losing the pleasurable tactile experience of holding the album, folding it out, looking at all the photos and reading the lyrics as we listen to the music. For me, it has always been a large part of understanding what the band is about, and what the message of the album is.

Burning the album to CD, the transfer often sounds better than the same CD you can buy in the store. The MP3 format is a degraded file, so it sounds even less like "real" music.

+1 w/ Vinyl. However, you can count on those "Digital DJs" to say otherwise.

I say go with vinyl, definitely. Most of them come with a free download of the album anyway.
