i am forever faithful to the tomato/basil/moz sandwhich on french bread at larchmont wine and cheese. it's as close to perfection as a sandwhich can come.

There is tons of excellent food, cheeses included, in LA, you just have to ferret it out. NYC is more condensed because of geography that's all. Thanks for spreading the word.
