A Farmer's Market Morning....

farmer's market carrots, studio city

I recently finished reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food", and I couldn't wait to get out to the Studio City farmer's market this morning. I stuck a couple of twenty-dollar bills in my back pocket and threw a "Ventura County Fair!!!" tote bag over my arm.

$22.50 and about half an hour later, I lugged this load home: one bunch of sweet carrots, one large head of cabbage, one bunch rainbow chard, three medium zucchini, one pound of broccoli, one bunch sweet basil, baggie full of jalapenos, two medium artichokes, a two-pound bag of mixed potatoes, one bunch green onions, bunches of sage and cilantro. Oh, and all the free samples of fresh fruit and teriyaki beef jerky I could eat!

Tonight I'll be making steamed artichokes and vegetable pilaf. Tomorrow, it's fish tacos with lots of cabbage and jalapeno crema. The next night? Perhaps a big bowl of basil pesto, pasta, and roasted zucchini. Good cooking, guilt-free, and easy on the wallet. What do you do with your farmer's market haul?

Dang, I didn't know about the Studio City CFM. I couldn't do the regular Hollywood trek today because of the marathon and I felt deprived (until I treated myself to an all-I-could-eat Thai buffet). So knowing about this (closer to home) market will be good news in the future.

oh, dude, the Studio City market is awesome!!! my favorite part is actually the pony rides and petting zoo for kids, OMG TINY PIGLETS!!!!

anyway, but yeah, it's a great market with a ton of vendors, parking's not too bad, it was a great morning!

they have baby goats too, they are cool.

plus there is one guy that sells thai basil!

Baby goats and piglets! Yum!!
Oh, wait...

zach, i have the hookup for thai basil, so remind me to get you some... :)

@db
Whoa, all-you-can-eat thai buffet?? Where?!?

Thai Kitchen in Burbank.

The buffet is from 11am to 3pm and runs about $7.50. I try to get there between 11:30 and noon, so everything is out, but hasn't been sitting there for hours. It's a fave!

!!!! db, you da man.

woot! Thanks db :)

You bet. It's the least I can do in exchange for the Studio City CFM tip.

I love the farmer's market - I go to Encino on Victory at Louise. But the more I buy, the more fresh food turns to brown mush by the end of the week.
