Beef Recall Affects Ridiculous Amount of SoCal Restaurants

westland/hallmark meat recall affects los angeles restaurant business Fallout from the massive Westland/Hallmark meat recall scandal continues to affect Southland restaurants, stretching from San Diego to Ventura County. The California Department of Public Health has released a document listing every food purveyor which has purchased the recalled beef -- and at 59+ pages, it's a doozy. Chances are very good you have purchased or ingested some of Westland/Hallmark's product at some point, since markets and restaurants across the city are represented.

My local How's Market in North Hollywood has got the bad beef; LAist favorite El Tepeyac was not spared either. Other surprises: the LA Sports Club Cafe in Westwood, Millie's Restaurant in Silver Lake, all Bob's Big Boy locations, Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks, and many, many, many, many more.

From the L.A. Now blog at the Times:

The list is a work in progress and will be added to as the state Public Health Department receives more information about where the 143 million pounds of recalled beef were sold, said spokeswoman Lea Brooks. She said the department has not heard of anyone getting sick from consuming recalled beef, but was responding to public requests for more information about where the meat has been distributed. "People are just fascinated by the list," she said.

I read the list yesterday on the LAT site and lo and behold found my favorite burger joint to be a customer of Westland. Great...

Now I understand why there isn't more attention and more public outrage regarding this mess.
It's a shame, but basically when you look at that list, you quickly realize who and what is consuming the beef. Kids and poor people (as evidenced by their multimillion dollar contract with the Federal School Lunch program and the hundreds of Carnicerias on the list. The kids don't have a voice and no one cares about the rest of them. Gelsons and Pavillions don't sell Westland beef and the rest of LA is vegan.

It pisses me off that my favorite burger is now permanently seared with the cruel images, not the establishment's fault, but I suppose it is somewhat of a case of "you get what you pay for".

I hope they deport the one asshole and give the other one a year in the clink.

Wow! Even hipster Lodge Steakhouse is in there! And I USED to like Lares in West L.A. Sad.

I don't think there's a lack of outrage just because this primarily impacts the poor. People probably just don't want to think about an unsafe food supply, period.

I think there's also an erroneous perception that those two bad apples will be punished, and this problem will be solved. All the other slaughterhouses are A-OK, and thousands of other people aren't breaking the law of-camera.

And now everyone can go back to feeling good again.

I agree with you Su. This has happened before as documented in The Jungle and Fast Food Nation. Unless the public fights for legislation that will help change how the meat packing industry operates.
