Hot Dog! The Stand Comes to Westwood
Hey, you know what's great? Hot dogs! You know what's even better? A new hot dog stand in a college neighborhood! Encino favorite The Stand has just opened a new location in Westwood, bringing a new flavor to UCLA's backyard.
As a former Westwood resident, I can definitely tell you that there's always room for another cheap, unique, and fast eatery in town, and The Stand looks like it will deliver the hot doggy goods. The website claims that The Stand "offers the comfort of early century diners, featuring comfortable space, sincere hospitality, and honest foods. Classic American food...done right!" I hate Classic American done wrong, don't you??
Anyway, to the important details: a dog loaded with your choice of condiments (onion, relish, fancy mustards and chipotle-laced sauces) will run you a mere $3.50 (with a side of chips!). Additions like chili and sauerkraut will up the price to $4.50, and cheese is an extra fifty cents. They also serve burgers, sandwiches, and salads, with the most expensive item (a chicken plate, borrrrring) coming in at $9.50. You can check out the full menu here.
But best of all? The Stand has some great weekly specials, like a $1 Dog Night on Mondays ($2.50 for "Loaded" dogs, does that sound dangerous to you?). Oh, and BEER. They have BEER. Did you hear that, UCLA students? BEER. I know. You're welcome.

This reminds me, where in LA has a good veggie dog?
The one at Pinks sucks.

Try Skooby's in Hollywood! They have a veggie dog. Check it:

Skooby's is correct. But my favorite Veggie Dog in LA so far is QT Chicago Hot Dogs in Sherman Oaks at Moorpark/Woodman (it's inside a liquor store).
Why The Stand does not do them? I have no idea why. It's not like they go bad or anything if you freeze them.

I hit The Stand up for lunch -- I heard mentions of "oh I love that place in the valley" no fewer than 3 times, which made me feel like I was in some foreign country or on the set of a movie.
No idea why they don't do the meatless sausage thing -- pretty lame. They have a bunch of salads, but who goes to a hot dog place for a salad? I had a dog w/ grilled peppers and grilled onions and chili. Perfectly complementing the fact that baseball exhibition season has begun.
Best part about The Stand? The fresh poppy seed hot dog buns (so hard to find these around here).
