If you've been enjoying our Wake Up LA: Breakfast Series this month, you're sure to be excited about the latest restaurant opening up in Hollywood: The Waffle. This new comfort-food "hipster" diner, with a menu by chef Scooter Kanfer-Cartmill, is already receiving fairly positive reviews only a few days in.
It's open 22 hours a day on weekends (convenient for the Cahuenga party-goer), serving up a hearty diner menu that is, yes, heavy on the waffles. But sticky bun waffles? Applewood bacon waffles? Corn jalapeno waffles? Even a gluten-free waffle! I'm also very interested in the hash brown dishes, including hash smothered in gravy or topped with smoked salmon and cream cheese.
The Waffle isn't just about breakfast, however: you can also get your fill of burgers, shakes, gravy fries, and old-fashioned iceberg-wedge salads. They also have a whole vegetarian section on the menu for you green beans, with faked-out Rubens, BLTs, and club sandwiches. They'll be kicking their dinner service into high gear soon, and the space even has an upstairs bar!
Our inside source checked out the place yesterday, and while the service was slow, he gave high marks to the waffle-cut fries. EaterLA and LA Times entertainment writer Elina Shatkin are also talking about the joint. Shatkin writes of the decor: retro-modern and painted brown, ochre and pale yellow like a 1970s kitchen (where's that avocado green refrigerator?). The 70s theme continues upstairs in a lounge that looks like the cousin of The Regal Beagle from "Three's Company."
70's kitsch notwithstanding, we'll go anywhere that promises breakfast, booze, and applewood-smoked bacon....

Can you dye your hair pink and eat yuca tacos here?
Ask the traitor who went without us!
I was here on Sunday morning this past weekend. They were slammed, having been featured on Daily Candy last week. The food was good, but there were definitely some issues with busy servers, cold food, and general kink-working-out. I think they have a lot of promise though, and it's in a good location which is basically devoid of breakfast places that are walkable to the Sunset & Vine building/hood.
Very cool! In looking at their menu I'm happy to see that they made a real effort to include stuff for vegetarians and even vegans. I'm looking forward to trying their fake rueben and the non-dairy shake... yum!
i've been totally eyeballing the sign for this place since it went up. you really can't have too many waffles in one city.
I work three blocks from here and went there for lunch because of this entry.
I'm vegan and I give this place an A-. I had the Un-Chicken Salad Sandwich and it was FUCKING DELICIOUS. So sweet and moist and tasty. The waffle fries were heavily seasoned, just like I like them.
But the non-dairy, vegan vanilla shake was out of this world. Thick and creamy and like a unicorn leaping over a rainbow into a pile of puppies. Just absolutely wonderful.
They're still having a few server issues because the place is so ridiculously packed all the time, but everyone I dealt with was very polite, friendly, and funny.
I can't wait to go back for the Fake Reuben and the Vegan Cobb salad. AND MORE MILKSHAKES.
Daniel Plainview would be proud.
I read about this place on Daily Candy too and decided to try it. Had the chopped cobb salad, partly on our helpful server's recommendation. Really delicious and the applewood smoked bacon won me over. Great dressing too which I found out is homemade in their kitchen after I asked. Wish I could buy some to take home. I also had a taste of my boyfriend's Vegan-Ruben sandwich which had tofurkey and lots of other vegan stuff on it. I never knew you could get so much flavor from an all-vegan ruben, but this place did it and my boyfriend loved it. We shared a chocolate waffle for dessert and it was perfect, which I guess is good for a place called The Waffle. We got seated fast and service was great. I hope this place sticks around because it's a good addition to the area. Try it out! (I commented on this place in other section too under the official review for The Waffle. But then I saw this entry and it looks like it has more comments so I'm posting it again here. Happy waffle-eating everyone!)
i don't think i've ever had a worse experience at a restaurant in the greater los angeles area. the waffle was recommended to my sister and i by a friend so we decided to stop by around noon on a thursday. i'm going to write a list of all the things that happened:
#1: we were seated at a table right next to the door that people kept leaving open even though it was horribly windy outside. the hostess also stood right next to the door but never closed it so i had to get up multiple times during the meal to shut it. also, there were plenty of other two person tables that were empty. don't know why she chose to give us that one.
#2: i ordered an iced coffee and when the waitress brought it to me she did not give me any milk or cream. she left before i noticed and it took me a good 5 minutes to get the attention of anyone working there. finally i got the attention of the hostess. this was our conversation:
me: "hi, could i please get some milk for my coffee?"
hostess: "i'm sorry, you want a glass of milk?"
me: "yes i would like some milk or cream for my coffee"
hostess: "oh, cream. okay."
and scene.
#3: i ordered a couple of eggs over easy that came with bacon that came with a choice of hash browns, fruit or cottage cheese plus your choice of toast. i am allergic to yeast and it is also passover so even if i wanted to eat toast i couldn't. when i ordered i asked the waitress if i could sub some cottage cheese for toast. she told me they didn't do substitutions. great. because it's so hard to put a scoop of ready made cottage cheese on a plate instead of toast. awesome.
#4: when the food arrived i cut into my eggs and discovered they were incredibly under done. it was like they threw some eggs into a frying pan and cooked them until just the outside was white therefore leaving the insides completely clear and uncooked. yum. again it took a while to get our waitress and she took them away and then returned to ask if that was how i ordered it. i said no i ordered them over easy, not undercooked.
#5: after we were done with our food she came by again and we asked for the check and then for some reason she took my sister's unfinished drink away from her. she had a glass of orange juice that was half full and instead of asking if she was finished she just took it away. idiot.
the best part of this entire experience was the check came quickly and we got to leave!
