Square One Wins Best Breakfast Spot in LA

Eggs at Square One Dining
Photo by Beth Kopley in her LAist review of Square One Dining

That's at least according to Details magazine's March issue which hits stands this week. In a list of top breakfast spots in large cities around the country, they give major kudos to Square One Dining, which also happens to be a favorite of LAist's.

This spare storefront with apricot-colored walls is where Robert Lee and Hayden Ramsey, both alums of top-notch kitchens, lavish the same meticulous attention on the elements of breakfast that they once did on elaborate sauces. The result: morning standards that are emphatically elevated but not gussied up. Muffins and pecan coffee cake arrive at the table warm from the oven. Fruit salad is a farmers’ market in a bowl. Be warned that your thick-sliced, slow-roasted Nueske’s bacon could upstage the omelet you order it with—and these are some damn good omelets. [Details]

Details, details -- you'd think they'd notice little things, like the walls are yolk yellow, not apricot. (and if they've been painted since Details was there, don't they have the big budget to send a fact checker?).

Of course, this is carping. Square One is fab!

Funny, biffles -- reminds me of how Maxim just got busted for faking a review of the upcoming Black Crowes record.

One of the greatest things about Square One, in my opinion, is the genuine friendliness of the staff. And yeah, the food is consistently awesome, breakfast or lunch.

I wonder if anyone's been hassled to take stress tests, etc given the proximity to the Church...

i dont get it! Are the Scientologists putting some kind of brainwashing drug in the food here ?I have been here twice second time after reading the review here last week and the first time about a year ago.I have to say IT SUCKED THEN AND STILL SUCKS!
the scrambled eggs were running off my plate and the bacon was like A 1 inch thick piece of leather wrapped in fat.
I just don't get it. If you really want a tasty breakfast i would go to Grub or the Griddle or even ihop over this place.

in all fairness, the original LAist review posted by Lindsay not all that long after Square One opened did note some problems -- but, like all of us, restaurants have good days and bad days. It's just that their bad days can lead to unhappy ex-customers heading to IHOP instead of to a local-owned, independent establishment.

Grub? over square one? iono about that...grub has been less and less satisfying the more i go...

I have to admit, as much as my comrades here at LAist have been, I have yet to visit. The last time I tried, was on a weekend... bad idea. A line 15 people deep on the sidewalk does not fare well with a hungry stomach. So off to Dusty's on Sunset Blvd. it was.

I'll see Square One on a weekday, I suppose, to try their veggie and vegan friendly breakfast treats.
