Local independent dance artist Liz Hoefner has directed and choreographed Fear of Drowning/Fear of Flying and will present its premiere this Friday through Sunday at the Diavolo Dance Space in the Brewery Arts Complex. According to her, the new dance theater work is a collection of stories, dialogues and dances that relate to actual and metaphorical fears of traveling, flying, drowning and dying in a post 9/11, tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina world. The cast of eight dancers, five actors and two musicians will explore the origins of fear in comic and tragic dance theater.

Though LA-based, Ms. Hoefner has presented her work throughout the country at well respected venues both here and abroad. A CalArts alumna, she recently choreographed Castor and Polluxfor John Schneider’s Ensemble Partch! at REDCAT. Her last large scale work, Confessions of a Repeat Offender included a group of women pedaling around the stage on tricycles and dancing up a storm.

Fear of Drowning/Fear of Flying runs at Diavolo Dance Space on Friday, Feb. 22nd and Saturday, Feb. 23rd at 8 PM and on Sunday, Feb. 24th at 7 PM (located in the Brewery Arts Complex at 616 Moulton Ave. in Downtown Los Angeles, 90031).
