Cal State Dominguez Hills Shut Down by Alleged Gunman*

Cal State Dominguez Hills ShutdownThe Daily Breeze is reporting that police were searching earlier this morning for a possible gunman at California State Dominguez Hills in Carson:

Two students apparently reported around 8:30 a.m. they saw a gunman carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and wearing a green jacket and no shirt, according to news reports.

The alleged gunman may have also had additional canisters of ammunition around his waist and he was headed toward Lacorte Hall, an building of classrooms. [Daily Breeze]

Fortunately, the situation has been resolved and the campus has just reopened. According to KNX1070 live on air, the gunman was reported by a witness. It looks like they saw a ROTC student with a drill rifle, not a homicidal maniac, and the police are with the student now.

UPDATE, 9:36 A.M.: KNX1070 on air live is reporting that some students who were in class during the incidnet found out after it was over. They are upset, and rightfully so, that there was no early warning system to protect the students.

UPDATE, 9:59 A.M.: In an interview with a staff member, KNX1070 finds that that since Virginia Tech, early warning systems were supposed to be in place, such as text message warnings. News apparently traveled via word-of-mouth and students were telling staff what was happening, not the other way around. A failure for Cal State?

Recent campus shootings elesewhere have made me wonder what would happen if something similar took place where i teach (CSULA). I had to dig online to find our Emergency Response information (an enormous document) and still don't know who would tell me what was happening or how. I can't even access my campus email from the computer in my office. And still, the cost of education goes up, and the funding goes down. Thanks, Arnold! I feel really safe.
