Riding the Rails (and Biking) Directly to LAX

crenshawline.jpgAnd then there was a train...

There could be a day when you go from Wilshire Blvd. down Crenshaw Ave, crossing the path of the Expo Line (under construction right now), through Leimart Park, into Downtown Inglewood and eventually hit LAX before route ends, connecting to the Green Line.

That's one option, at least, for Metro's North/South Crenshaw-Prairie Transit Corridor Study. Tonight is the first of four public meetings to get a status report of the project and schedule for future steps. Since the last set of community meetings, Metro says some potential routes or alignments have been eliminated from further consideration and others have been added.

But What About Bicycles?

Even though the Bike Master Plan community process has been a disappointment so far, bicyclists will continue to show up to the public meetings, which are intended for people to provide input on bicycle policies, facility improvements and other related issues. Tonight's meeting is in West LA.

You can give input by taking taking an online survey.

They should recreate something similar to the Orange Line: A separate, segmented bike path. Or at least bike lanes running parallel to the track!

Who would ride their bike to the airport? What about luggage?

Think outside the suitcase strux! I've taken weekenders with everything I needed in a backpack, but for those longer stays, it's not out of the realm of possibility to ship your bigger baggagesses to your destination hotel and then ship them back again, thus enabling you and your carry-on to ride ride ride!

It's a couple extra steps that are not for everybody, but it's certainly doable.

Come to think of it, can someone make a comment here on where LAX long-term bike parking is?

That's a great question Zach. I emailed the LAWA (http://www.lawa.org) to see if they offered any, then did a search of "bicycle parking" on their site. The only thing it yielded up was a link to a downloadable PDF (link below) for some sort of Metro bike parking survey. None of the questions pertain directly to bike parking at airports but I'm gonna fill it out and mail it anyway (of course there's no online version; that would be convenient!)

Keep in mind, also, that the airport is a pretty big employer. It may not be so much that people can bike to their flight as it is that people can bike to work.

I'm down here in Orange County, but I work close to LAX. I bike up to Long Beach once-a-week and take the Blue Line and Green Line to work.

About the only thing I'd like to is to be able to take my bike on the train during morning rush hour...

RedMercury, you must be one of the few consciencious bike commuters who rides the Green/Blue lines. I worked a three-month gig in El Segundo last year and took crowded morning and evening rush-hour Blues to the Greens to Aviation station and back several times a week and there were plenty of riders who didn't heed the no-bikes rule.
