A Night of True Abstractions

Women, the New York School, and Other True Abstractions by Maggie NelsonWe can't think of a better way to celebrate a new book than to invite musicians, poets, visual artists, performance arists and writers to respond to the new book. This is exactly what Maggie Nelson has done for her new book Women, the New York School, and Other True Abstractions and tonight is the night.

Nelson's book is considered one of the first extended works that examines the roles that women played in and around the New York School of poets from the 1950s to the present. Her analyses of well-known artists and her consideration of their work from a feminist perspective lends itself perfectly to tonight's experiential book launch.

Anne Carson, Bruce Hainely, Eileen Myles, Tara Jane O'Neil, Claudia Rankine and many others will respond to Nelson's book on stage through their chosen craft. The performance begins at 8pm a Disney Concert Hall as part of the CalArts/Redcat season.

Nelson will give a free lecture at 6pm to talk about the research for her book and to provide context for the visual and performing artists that will "respond" to her book at 8pm. It should be an interesting night of art, critical thinking and celebration. The online box office is now closed, but tickets can be purchased for $15 at 213.237.2800.
