Wake Up LA: Town & Country
![]()
We’ve already discussed the satisfying lunch and bright atmosphere at Town & Country Bakery & Café in Silver Lake, but now it’s time to talk breakfast. Served all day from this laid back, casual establishment, breakfast includes the usual fare (pancakes, eggs bacon) and less common items like a Brie and walnut quesadilla or French toast stuffed with Mascarpone and marmalade.
There was one menu item that jumped out at us: Asparagus Hash ($8.95). The dish consisted of a bottom layer of country potatoes mixed with onions and Asparagus, then eggs topped with mushroom gravy. It was something we’d never seen before at another restaurant and seemed perfect for a chilly morning. For those wanting flesh, there’s a hash with salmon and shallot-dill crème fraiche.

The food arrived hot and smelled delicious. The eggs were cooked over easy as requested. The potatoes were lightly charred with crispy edges, yet soft and moist inside. The vegetarian gravy was surprisingly flavorful as far as white gravies go. Each ingredient was tasty individually or as an incredible savory mess mixed together that you could sop up with toast. A small fruit cup accompanied the entrée, but you had to ask for it. It was a nice mix of ripe melon, pineapple and cantaloupe that went well with the hearty main dish.
The food at Town & Country is simple, fresh and pleasing. Opened a couple of years ago by owner Anna Statnan, the small café also offers well-made sandwiches, soups and specialties like Sloppy Joes and the very popular mac‘n cheese . On the bakery side, tasty cupcakes, compelling trifles and luscious banana pudding will beckon you towards them again and again. Located in the heart of Silver Lake at Sunset Junction, Town & Country’s easy going atmosphere brings in families and hung-over hipsters alike. It’s a homey place free of pretension and great for people watching on Sunset Blvd. Initially the go-to place if Madame Matisse, Eat Well (now shuttered) or Millie’s down the street was too busy, Town & Country is holding its own. With special dishes like the Asparagus Hash, it’s easy to see why people are coming back.
