DVD Tuesday: Affleck Rising

When was the last time an actor executed a more profound career turnaround than Casey Affleck? Gone Baby Gone is his second superb performance of the year. If you don't see it for him, see it for Amy Ryan's breakout, Oscar-nominated turn. The mere presence of the divine Anne Hathaway makes Becoming Jane worth renting. James McAvoy was better in this than in the over-hyped (but still good) Atonement. No new ground was broken in We Own the Night, but it was still damn entertaining. Not so for No Reservations which wasted the brilliant Aaron Eckhart. Has it really been 25 years since Zapped! was released? Greatest poster ever?

Gone Baby Gone - very surprisingly - was one of the best films I saw last year. The Amy Ryan character was stunning, and for the first hour of the film, believe it or not, the directing was just about flawless.

Good to hear we agree on something after the bruising There Will Be Blood affair of last Tuesday. When this movie first came out I was lukewarm on seeing it until I saw that my secret crush Michelle Monaghan was in the cast. I almost think I liked Gone Baby Gone so much because my expectations were fairly low.

Agreed! This was maybe the biggest and most pleasant surprise of last year. Six months later, an awful lot of Gone Baby Gone is still lingering.

And that Michelle Monaghan is adorable... She's so cute, in MI:III she made Tom Cruise seem straight.
