Hollywood Bowl 2008 Season Preview: Petty, Python, Diana... Radiohead???

cheap trick beatles sgt. peppers hollywood bowl
Last August, Aimee Mann, Joan Osborne, Rob Laufer, Ian Ball from Gomez, and Al Jorgensen joined Cheap Trick and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra to recreate Sgt. Peppers on it's 40th Anniversary. They'll do it again June 28th.

We're four months out from the official start of the 2008 Hollywood Bowl Season and the schedule is nearly complete. Single tickets won't go on sale for a couple months but the Bowl is offering 16 different series packages, each containing 3-5 genre-specific performances.

Radiohead has yet to confirm dates and venues for their summer tour but we've found a nice run of mid-summer dates that remain "open" on the Hollywood Bowl calendar. And we can dream.

Here's a shortlist of the performances we're most looking forward to:

Pre-season (not available as part of any package):
April 16: Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z (pre-sale begins tomorrow, 2/8 as mentioned earlier today)
May 29: R.E.M., Modest Mouse, The National (no on-sale date announced yet).
May 31: The Cure (rescheduled from last year) tix.
Jun 14-15: Playboy Jazz Fest (program to be announced Feb. 27)

June:
Fri 20: Opening Night Gala
We 25: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Stevie Winwood
Sa 28: Sgt. Peppers... Revisited, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra + Cheap Trick + guests
Su 29: Gilberto Gil, Devendra Banhart

July
4th-6th: Fireworks presumably... or ... RADIOHEAD?!? Nothing on the schedule yet from June 29-July 8.
We 9: Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis
Fr/Sa 18-19: Julie Andrews - The Gift of Music
Su 20: Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings
25-26: Diana Ross & the LA Phil: Lady Supreme
Su 27: Gnarls Barkley, Youssou N'Dour
We 30: Gerald (Wilson) and Hank (Jones): 90 + 90, w/ Kenny Burrell, John Faddis, Bobby Hutcherson, Nancy Wilson...

August
1-2: Eric Idle's 'Not the Messiah' with the LA Phil
8-10: Les Misérables In Concert, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra
20: Jamie Cullum w/ the Count Basie Orchestra

September
12-14: Fireworks Finale -- Brian Wilson and the LA Phil
19: Sing-a-Long Sound of Music
27: A Celebration of Rumi: The Sights & Sounds of Mystic Persia w/ Yo-Yo Ma and members of the Silk Road Project, Kayhan Kalhor Ensemble, Balouchi Music Ensemble, Nour Mohammad Dorpour, Ostad Kaboli

Great!!!!

Thanks for the info!

The classical picks of this year are amazing! Wow...so...probably no Europe trip for this summer!~

Wow, you're going to skip Europe for H-Bowl? Hardcore!

I can still go in September, so I can avoid the tourists also!

smart man.

Andy you conniving punk :> tricking me into thinking radiohead was confirmed... i'll get you back somehow...

think positive anjali!

hmmm...Radiohead!
I presume, it will be much better to listen to them in a small venue... imagine something like Henry Fonda or the Wiltern.

but, as per classical, Lang Lang is supposed to be the number one selling artist in the classical world, and Yo Yo Ma is someone you won't miss!!!

Now gotta go, have the last tea with my 80years old friend and finish knitting:)

Radiohead will still be touring in Europe between 6/29-7/8...

Help!

What is the citibank password for the Jay-Z / Mary J. presale? I have a citibank credit card, says that's what you needs, but it is also asking for a password! HELP!

Let me answer my own question.

F' Citibank, they didn't do squat for me.

Presale pass is KIIS

Oh man... Good point re: European tour dates. I don't know how I missed that.

I'm curious as to whether they will have two separate stretches in the states.

One option could be May in the eastern U.S. late-July/August in the West.

Or splitting the U.S. Tour with dates in Australasia.

The Bowl is available for lease events before the June 20 season opening, so Radiohead in May is still a possibility. I'm really hoping they do the Bowl (or even several nights at the Greek) as opposed to Dodger Stadium or something like that.
