For at least the past two days (maybe longer), the Daily News has been tracking on their home page where some of Los Angeles' high school football players will be going to college.
If you're curious, it looks like a lot of Notre Dame and UCLA. But to me, the list seems so out of place. On one hand, it does give reading the paper that nice hometown feel (if I had any idea who any of these kids are). On the other hand, Los Angeles is a huge city, not a little town in Texas (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's a little jarring to open up a pretty major paper and see pictures of high school kids posed like pro players splashed across the front page.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against football. I like watching it, I enjoy a platter of wings, I got excited for the Super Bowl. But that's pro football, with grown-ups, who have already made careers out of it.
Honestly, the crochety yet well-meaning grandma in me is screaming, "They're just kids! This is wreaking having on their semi-developed egos!" I don't remember this type of thing being announced in my hometown paper growing up, and I don't come from a particularly big town. Do these 17- and 18-year old boys really need to feel like superstars before they even leave their parents' homes? And, is this really news in a city like Los Angeles? Or am I a complete old lady, and it's it just nice to be updated on what's happening at local high schools?

Everyone loves football. I just got back from Texas where the lead story on every local news channel had something to do with football. Friday night lights indeed.
True, every American loves football unless they're a terrorist but she has a point. It can't be good for these kids to get this much attention at such a young age.
