LA Mag's Bargain Foodie Picks

Ia magazine's bargain food picks Have you had enough of $5 coffee? $99 burgers? $125 martinis? I know I am -- doesn't anybody in this city want to find the cheapest drinks, meals, and booze? Los Angeles Magazine comes through this month with a feature on great deals and bargain finds on everything from martinis to furniture to underpants. We went straight for the food section, of course -- and here are our top food bargain picks from the February issue. What are your picks for best foodie bargains in the city?

  • 35-cent Martini at The Edison Downtown: Next time I'm in the mood for a fun, adventurous cocktail hour, I'm skipping the $125 martini at Nic's and heading straight for The Edison on Thursday nights, where you can get a gin martini for 1930's prices.
  • India Sweets & Spices: With four locations in Los Feliz, Palms/Culver City, Canoga Park, and Northridge, there's no excuse not to indulge in some of the tastiest, cheapest, vegetarian Indian food in the city. LAist indulged in the lunch plate last year and found it very good, indeed.
  • Thrifty Ice Cream at Rite-Aid: Before frozen yogurt was all the rage, Angelenos seeking out an ice cream treat would go to their local drugstore and get a scoop of good ol' fashioned ice cream, in a waffle cone. You can still find them at Rite-Aids for just over a dollar.
  • Sushi Gen's Sashimi Special: What's better -- or harder to find -- than good, fresh, cheap sushi? Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo's got it -- a sashimi special for only $15 that includes about two dozen pieces of market-fresh fish.
  • Jiraffe's Prix Fixe Menu: as the success of DineLA has shown, reasonably-priced prix-fixe meals at top restaurants are a great way to sample some of the city's best cuisine without breaking the bank. Jiraffe's "Monday Night Bistro" is priced at $35, and the website promises a dining experience that is "a little more casual with candle lamps and paper table cloths, a little less heavy with signature Bistro three-course menus, and food and carafes of wine at special reduced prices."

This old fogey remembers when you could get a triple scoop of Thrifty's ice cream for 15 cents.

I remember. Also, we had to walk there, 2 miles each way, in the snow. Those were the days!

mmm...dinos....

don't forget zankou's quarter dark plate. i dream in garlic.

I used to love getting Thrifty's Ice Cream when I was little. Now at my local Rite-Aid you'd be lucky to get served within 5 minutes and a few calls from the old lady working the register over the intercom to get someone to help. When someone finally emerges to help you, it's a sullen teenager who's hating life and looks at you like you just cut off his emo bangs.

Zankou's is inferior to the all mighty RoRo's Chicken on Sunset. I can pick up a quarter chicken (white or dark) with a side salad, hummus, rice, and a couple pitas for $5. FIVE DOLLARS!!

thai padio in the shopping center at 3rd/fairfax across from the farmer's market has an unbeatable $3.99 lunch special including entree (recommended tofu pad thai), rice, salad and wontons. delicious and perfect amount of food. don't let the strip mall-esque atmosphere scare you away!

I miss Chocolate Fudge Ripple ice cream!!!

There is an all-you-can-eat Chinese restaurant near the Kitchen in Silverlake. Lunch is under 5 bucks, even with a drink. One of these days I'll have to write it up.

skip the culver city India Sweets and Spices, and head straight to Bharaat Bazaar/Samosa House! mmmmmm

Nothing beats a Honeywheat Chocolate Donut ($.89) from Bob's Donuts at the Farmer's Market. 1000 of Cheerios gave their lives for your donut.
