LA City Attorney On 'Double Bubble' Voting Mess

Calling it the "double bubble" where Decline-To-State/Non-Partisan voters had to ink a Democratic bubble at the top of their card in order for their ballot to count, Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo called on the Los Angeles County Registrar and California Secretary of State to review and make sure the intent of everyone's vote counted.

"In Los Angeles County alone, 776,000 voters are susceptible to double bubble trouble," Why Tuesday? writes in a blog post. "20% of Californians consider themselves, and are registered as, decline-to-state voters, yet in this historical nomination process their voice is jeopardized by baffling ballot rules and puzzled poll workers."

Meanwhile, Courage Campaign is hoping you kept your stub if you ran into problems. From CBS2:

Democrat Barack Obama's campaign, which expected its advantage to come from independent voters, placed calls to nonpartisan supporters reminding them to fill in the bubble.

Meanwhile, one voter-outreach group that claimed the county's ballot setup violates state election law said it planned to set up a Web site to collect ballot stub numbers from nonpartisan voters in order to request special hand-counts from the county registrar's office.

"The registrar has to be willing to tell people whether their vote counted," said Courage Campaign chair Rick Jacobs. The group is not affiliated with any candidate, but had retained an election law firm that also represented Obama. [CBS2]

Yesterday, LAist spoke to Mimi Kennedy, Dharma & Greg actor and a poll inspector about the confusion.
