I'm Showing You Mine...

Mmm...oatmeal

As you may have guessed, we're focussed on breakfast this month. And this February is a chilly one. Last week we were cycling through storms like planes landing at LAX. When it's like this, you need a little something extra for breakfast in the morning to keep you warm. And, since having different kinds of grains is good for you, oatmeal is just the ticket. Everyone likes theirs different -- some people like it instant, others like to go old school and cook it up in a pot. Some people like bananas, or chocolate chips, flavored cinnamon, or even vanilla. Even instant, where you can get it flavored with all manner of things right in the packet -- peaches, pears, blueberries. These days I make mine with nonfat milk (extra protein, extra calcium!) with brown sugar, sliced almonds (more proteins! Good fats!) and dried cherries. Which seems kinda weird, but it's great, they taste tart, a little appley. It's a real treat.

How do you like your oatmeal?

I just got back into eating oatmeal - I ate it all the time when I was a kid and then went on a ten year hiatus. Trader Joe's makes a pretty good instant apple cinnamon, and I too use skim milk and dried cherries, as well as a little bit of honey. Tasty.

i've never been a real fan until recently but, lately, it is my (daily) breakfast of choice. my fave is maple brown sugar with skim milk, sliced fresh strawberries and a handful of almonds. in fact, i'm off the make some now :)

I love oatmeal and have been eating it since I was little. I use to have my grandmother use a colander to sift the oats out of my oatmeal (yes, I know Spoiled brat). But with time I came to like the taste of the oats. Now I make it the following way:
1. Cook oats with water for a few minutes. If you can use filtered water instead of tap water. I know it boils anyway but it just tastes better.
2. Continue cooking but gradually ad milk. I love HORIZON organic milk but the key here is to stir oatmeal as you continue to add milk. This will make it fluffy and full which is the key to good oatmeal.
3. Allow to cool. This sets the oatmeal and thickens it just a bit.

*Instant oatmeal is fine, especially with flavors. It does have sugar but it tastes better. Also, sometimes I ad have a banana or raisins.
