Not to beat a dead goatsucker, but did this alleged "101 West" sighting even occur in the Valley? The post doesn't say.

Yeah, it confuses the hell out of people when giving directions... "to get to my house, get on the 101 South, but it will also say 101 East, just trust me." Here's a picture and a previous post about it: http://laist.com/2007/03/20/east_south_west_north_wtf.php

"...the City of Los Angeles refers to it as 101 West in the Valley..." Probably another reason why the Valley attempted to secede from its clueless overlords.

Actually, the City of Los Angeles refers to it as 101 West in the Valley, while Caltrans sticks to the real North/South directions no matter where you are.

Calling the north/south 101 the "West Freeway" certainly doesn't lend any credibility to the 1996 tale.
