The Green Truck: The Taco Truck's Evil Twin

greentruck.gifIt was bound to happen, I'm just sorry I didn't think of this idea first: a "taco truck" that sells healthy, organic food. "Sacrilege!" you're probably saying but then when you think about it some more you have to admit it is a pretty good idea, especially in health-conscious L.A.

But those expecting taco truck prices may be a little turned off by the Green Truck's Whole Food-esque prices. The "Create Your Own" salad, wrap or pita combo special with organic soda and "a goodie" will set you back $14.95. Yes, for lunch from a truck! But then again, it all sounds so yum. Mmm, Ahi Poke tacos -- fresh ahi tuna in a citrus and cilantro marinade with cabbage, green onions and pineapple salsa ($11) -- and mandarin-ahi tuna salad. If you want something slightly cheaper, there's the $6 grilled cheese sandwich or $5 soups and an array of snacks like Clif Bars and Kettle Chips.

For drinks, you can choose from a Blue Sky soda, Moroccon Mint Lemonade and Ground Works coffee, to name a few. And if you're lucky enough to spot the truck during breakfast hours, you can get a $5 breakfast burrito made with flourless sprouted tortillas, mushrooms, peppers, eggs, bacon and cheese or create your own scramble ($6).

I'd include a review of the truck's fare but I can't figure out when it'll show up where I work in Santa Monica. Sometimes it's there in the morning for breakfast and sometimes for lunch when I'm already on my way elsewhere for food, but it's not there consistently. The Green Truck's site has a nifty GPS tracker so you can locate the truck but no printed/set schedule of its stops. (Sometimes I like to check the tracker at odd hours to see where the truck is. Heh.) I suppose I could call the kitchen as the site suggests but I prefer to do everything via the Internet. I'm lazy like that.

For the uber green people among us, you'd probably be interested to know that the Green Truck is also environmentally conscious as it runs on customized vege-oil, making it a "0" carbon-footprint mobile restaurant and the food is prepared in a solar-powered commissary in Culver City. Also, the food packaging, containers, bags, napkins, and utensils are made from biocompostable products.

Currently the Green Truck (there are only two at the moment) can be spotted on the Westside -- Santa Monica/West L.A. and Culver City/Beverly.

This is so cool! What a great way to enjoy more healthful and environmental conscious "fast" food. Hope they add more trucks to their fleet so they can share the love around the whole city.

Good idea but limited to where it can be. Not everyone is going to pay $6 for a grill cheese sandwich. The "roach coach" will still service the late night partier, blue collar workers, and the rest if the general community.

No, she doesn't.

This post was pitched last week, discussed over the weekend, written last night and scheduled for today. I slammed my head against my desk when I saw it last night come through my e-mail box. Oh well, what timing.

Yeah, actually I've seen this green truck around and as luck would have it the PR people actually sent me a press release. But thanks for bringing Ideal Bite to my attention.

Nice idea, but way too tony for me. It unfortunately continues the Eating Healthy is Expensive meme.

OK, I was finally able to visit the truck. It stops at the Colorado Center in Santa Monica from 9 to 2 and then goes to Abbot Kinney for the rest of the work day. I highly recommend the grilled cheese sandwich with apples but wasn't so crazy about the sweet potato fries which were soggy. Really nice people who work there though. I met the owner -- cute guy with longish hair. Apparently they have two more trucks that are currently getting serviced and they're looking to send those out to the Eastside.

But, but, but.... when's the Valley Green Truck coming? :(

How can we make vote for an option that when the truck gets next to us a mile radius, we get a txt message in our cellphones, or maybe an email!!!
