It’s always a special day at the racetrack--really, it is--and this Saturday at Santa Anita Park is no exception. In addition to the usual characters, inventive cussing and sweet horse action, the kinda bimonthly KROQ microbrew fest is happening in the infield. The 20 or so local breweries will be featuring their favorite beers in 7 oz. sizes for $2.50. And this is all in addition to the main event, which is the Sunshine Millions Classic with a million dollar purse—DANG. If you’ve never bet at the track before, this is an excellent way to start what might turn into a lifelong (and life fulfilling!) addiction to gambling.

For those who are new to horse gambling, here’s a few tips for making the most out of your Santa Anita experience. If you are confused with how to place bets and pick horses, it's perfectly appropriate to ask fellow patrons for help--most folks are pretty friendly. Also, there is normally a guy who sells dollar hot dogs--make it your beeswax to find him. And most importantly, don’t let anyone judge you for the way you behave at the racetrack. If you want to wear a nude bodysock or suck on mustard packets or yell at things that aren’t there, you go right ahead, baby! A microbrew fest at the track merits what we wayward Catholics would call a "Dispensation Day".

Doors open at 10 am and the first race is at 11:45. If it’s still raining cats tomorrow this whole thing might be cancelled, so call ahead at 626-574-RACE or check the website before you make the haul. Admission to the microbrew fest is free with the $5 park entrance fee.
