Magnificent Ambersons at the New Beverly

TALK
What’s up with all the development in Downtown LA? What’s it going to look like in 5, 10 or 20 years? Moderated by Christopher Hawthorne, Los Angeles Times architecture critic, ALOUD at the Central Library features panelists Lauren Bon, Tom Gilmore, Martha Welborne and James Von Klemperer, AIA to discuss all things Downtown and development.

7 PM // ALOUD at the Central Library: Mark Taper Auditorium // 631 Fifth & Flower streets, LA // FREE (but standing room only).

FILM
The Orson Welles double feature at the New Beverly screens Citizen Kane and . Everyone knows that Citizen Kane is the much lauded movie about a man and his sled (we think a tad overrated), but many might not know of Welles’ Ambersons -- about unrequited love and a spoiled son. This one has “mommy issues” written all over it.

7:30 pm // New Beverly Cinema // 7165 West Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles // $7.

THEATRE
Since we’re on the Orson Welles kick, Orson’s Shadow is playing at the Pasadena Playhouse. This is a play about a play – where Orson Welles directs Lawrence Olivier and the young Joan Plowright in
Ionesco’s Rhinoceros. All those egos would never fit on one stage.

8 pm // Pasadena Playhouse // 39 El Molino Ave., Pasadena // $45-$65

JAZZ
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt brings his quartet to the Jazz Bakery tonight through Jan. 26. He’s been compared to Clifford Brown and Miles Davis … why don’t you see for yourself if he’s living up to the hype?

Until 8 and 9:30 pm // Jazz Bakery // 3233 Helms Ave., Culver City // $25-$30.
